Program Description

One of our most popular programs, “Speechless” opens up a world of communication without using a single word. Aided by a pantomime, the audience sees how a story can be told simply through music and body language. They follow the shape of a melodic line of Brahms to discover questions and answers in the music. And then there is that “Unanswered Question” of Charles Ives, to which Monique suggests a story on a far away planet. In a musical conversation between a violin and a viola (Mozart’s “Sinfonie Concertante”) all elements of conversation from giggling to fighting are depicted. A conversation of a different kind is heard when two cats come on stage in Rossini’s hilarious Cat Aria in which the two singers converse with only one word: “Meow!”

No medium proves the power of music’s language more than the movies. The audience is invited to join with the orchestra in playing and singing James Horner’s theme song from “Titanic”. Music to “My Heart Will Go On” can be downloaded here. Even the written language is represented in this program, as we end with children helping mime and “secretary” in Leroy Anderson’s “The Typewriter”.
